The Hartford Financial Services Group
Founded in 1810, The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc. (NYSE: HIG) is one of the largest investment and insurance companies based in the United States, with offices in the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil and Ireland.
The Hartford is a leading provider of investment products - annuities, mutual funds, college savings plans - as well as life insurance, group and employee benefits, automobile and homeowners' insurance, and business insurance.
The Hartford serves millions of customers worldwide - including individuals, institutions, and businesses - through independent agents and brokers.
After nearly 200 years in business, The Hartford is known for its superior customer service and continued operational excellence.
Frustrated by insurance rates that were unreasonably high and claims settlements that were routinely handled with disregard, Robert Pein was determined to create a new kind of insurance company dedicated to serving the needs of the community – not the needs of the insurance executives.
In 1921, State Automobile Mutual Insurance Company was founded. With three employees and a rented room in downtown Columbus, Ohio, Pein set forth to tackle the inequities in the insurance industry. From the very beginning, State Auto advocated the independent agency system as the best approach to serving the needs of its policyholders. To this day, as hometown neighbors, independent agents continue to provide efficient, professional and more personalized service than that of their competitors. Just like Robert Pein had always dreamed.
Currently, State Auto writes business in 33 states from Michigan to Florida, from Utah to Vermont, through approximately 3,400 independent agencies. Our 2,000-plus employees work out of the corporate headquarters in Columbus, Ohio, 11 regional and branch offices, and numerous claim service offices throughout the nation.
In 1923, insurance executive Hawthorne K. Dent had a vision to pioneer a whole new approach to insurance. Defying convention, and ignoring his doubtful peers, Dent started The General Insurance Company of America Corporation. In 1953, the company began looking for new ways to compete with direct
insurance writers. The answer was computer automation tools. These became the hallmark of the company’s new business: Selective Auto and Fire Insurance Company of America, or Safeco. Based in Seattle, far from the center of insurance activity in the Northeast, “The General,” as it was known, was at first dismissed. But in the coming years it would earn praise for its competitive prices and superb service. Safeco took a major step in 1997 by acquiring American States Financial Corporation. This doubled its agent force, increased its presence east of the Rockies, and became a leading writer of insurance for small- to mid-sized businesses.
